What should you expect at our church on Sunday mornings?
FPC Shelbyville is a “historic county-seat church”, and we desire to create a worship experience that is welcoming to all. We are working to move beyond our past and embrace our future in many ways and worship is one of them. When you arrive, you will receive a bulletin that outlines the service and includes a number of announcements. Musical instrumentation is traditional church worship music(piano and organ) with occasional handbells, guitar, bass, children’s choir and other musical talents of the church membership who play for special music and offertories). Both traditional hymns and more recent Christian songs are sung. Dress would probably be described as “casual” (some come in jeans and others in suits and ties), much like many work places today. Visitors are welcomed by the pastor (and hopefully by the ushers, greeters, and congregation), but are not asked to identify themselves publicly. No “raise your hand if you’re new!” The first half of the service includes announcements and a time of greeting and welcoming followed by a prayer, singing, call to worship (focusing the congregation on what we have come to do), a prayer of confession and the assurance of pardon (God’s love and grace to us), and a time for children. The second half includes the scripture readings (both the Old and New testaments), a sermon, prayers of the people, the Lord’s prayer (debts and debtors), affirmation of our faith and closing songs.
What to Wear
More important than what you wear to church, we want you to be comfortable here.
You’ll find everything from suits and ties to blue jeans on a Sunday morning. Women often wear skirts, slacks, or dresses; men usually wear dress shirts and slacks, but it can vary from collared shirts and khakis to sport coats, and sometimes suits and ties. Youth often wear shorts and tennis shoes but you may also see some in their “Easter best.” So, don’t let what you wear keep you from coming to worship God with us.
We gather for worship together at 8:45 am and 11:00 am each Sunday. Please Join us!
